THE SMALL STUFF
To add personality,
Brenda focused on
the details, adding
ruffles to lampshades
and pom-pom fringe
to plain pillows. “ It’s
not what you spend,
but what you spend it
on that can really
make a house feel
pretty,” she says.

I
DINING
CHAIR
MAKEOVER
Brenda replicated
the woven dining
chair backing (see
page
58
) that was
originally part of
her rattan set with
the help of an
upholsterer and her
own can-do spirit.
■ Know what
you want
Brenda
took photographs
of the original
fabric weave from
several different
angles so she
could confidently
reproduce the look.
■ Get help
She
counted on an
upholsterer to
measure and cut
the fabric strips.
■ Take a chance
When Brenda’s
upholsterer refused
to nail into the aged
rattan for fear of
ruining it, she took
matters into her
own hands. Relying
on the photos of the
original, she wove
the strips and
carefully attached
them to the chair
frames with nail
heads. The risk was
worth it—it
worked! (
